What is the main function of a cylinder head?
The cylinder head sits on to the cylinder block within the internal combustion engine, closing the top of the cylinder which forms the combustion chamber within the engine. Air and fuel are led to the cylinder via passages, this space is provided by the head gasket which seals the cylinder head.
How do you know when a cylinder head needs replacing?
The main signs that a cylinder needs replacing are
1. Overheating When a cylinder head cracks it can affect the coolant passages and effects the ability for compression gases to move from the combustion cycle to those coolant passages. When this occurs, the coolant is misplaced causing the head to overheat which can lead to cracking.
2. Inefficient fuel consumption Usually caused by valves not sealing correctly and therefore not creating the correct pressure needd in the combustion cycle. You’ll notice this as you’ll be getting a significantly less amount of fuel for your money overall.
3. High Oil Consumption When seals come off or valves wear down, oil leaks into the exhaust ports which means oil consumption will be much higher than usual.
4. White smoke from the engine This is a clear indicator that there is a problem with your cylinder head, it’s a sign that the coolant and the oil have mixes due to cracks in the head. Or, it could reflect that exhaust gases are passing through the cylinder head, either one indicates that the head needs to be replaced.
If you recognise any of the signs above or feel you require a new cylinder head, then please contact us for more information on the references above.
