How Does a Cummins Fuel System Work?
While a Cummins fuel system’s inner workings can vary depending on the specific model, the process generally goes as follows:
- Fuel is transported
The fuel begins its journey in the fuel tank. It is then supplied to the fuel system by the fuel pump. The fuel pump draws fuel from the tank and sends it to the fuel filter.
- Fuel is filtered
The fuel passes through the primary and secondary filters, which remove any dirt and debris that could interfere with your diesel engine’s fuel system components. The fuel may also pass through a water separator, which removes water from the fuel. This helps prevent damage to the fuel system and avoids a decrease in combustion efficiency.
- Fuel is pressurised
The fuel pump pressurises the fuel before sending it to the injectors. It generates the high pressure needed for fuel injection.
- Fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber
The fuel injectors have the role of delivering fuel to the combustion chamber. These injectors can be electronically controlled, delivering fuel at precise times, pressures, and quantities in order to optimise the combustion process. Once delivered, the fuel mixes with the compressed air and spontaneously combusts.
- Exhaust gases exit
After combustion, the exhaust gases produced are transported out of the combustion chamber and through the exhaust system. Cummins fuel systems often employ various emissions control technologies to mitigate the environmental impact of diesel exhaust.
